Prophet Yaqub

 

Introduction

Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him), known as Jacob in the Bible, was the son of Prophet Ishaq (Isaac) and the father of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph). Yaqub is considered one of the great prophets in Islam and is renowned for his patience, steadfast faith, and devotion to Allah. His story is a source of lessons on how to endure hardships with trust in Allah’s wisdom and mercy.

The Family of Prophet Yaqub

Prophet Yaqub was married to two women, Leah and Rachel, and had many children. Among them, his beloved son Yusuf (Joseph) was the most beloved to him. Yaqub's family was large, and his sons were known as the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

One of the most famous aspects of Yaqub's story is his relationship with his son Yusuf. Yaqub’s love for Yusuf was evident, which later led to jealousy and hardship.

The Story of Prophet Yusuf and Yaqub

Prophet Yaqub’s life took a painful turn when his son Yusuf was separated from him. Yusuf's brothers, driven by jealousy over their father's affection for him, plotted to throw him into a well and deceive their father into believing that Yusuf had been devoured by a wild animal.

When Yaqub received the news, he was devastated and said:
"Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe." (Surah Yusuf 12:18)

He trusted in Allah and never gave up hope of finding Yusuf, even though many years passed. His patience and faith were an example to his family and followers.

Yaqub’s Endurance and Faith

Even though Yaqub was separated from Yusuf for many years, he never lost hope. He believed that Allah’s mercy was greater than any hardship. During this time, he suffered the loss of his sight from the intense grief he felt, but he remained hopeful that Allah would reunite him with his son.

In a profound moment, when his sons returned with Yusuf after his release from captivity, Yaqub said:
"Indeed, I find the smell of Yusuf, if you did not think me to be weak in mind." (Surah Yusuf 12:94)

This shows how deeply Yaqub’s faith in Allah’s plan was, trusting that Allah would bring about a positive end to the suffering.

The Reunion of Father and Son

Allah granted Yaqub the ultimate relief when he was finally reunited with Yusuf after many years. When Yusuf became a powerful official in Egypt and his brothers came to seek food during a famine, he revealed his identity to them.

The Quran describes this reunion as a moment of profound emotion and relief:
"And when the caravan had departed, their father said, 'Indeed, I find the smell of Yusuf. If you did not think me weak in mind.'" (Surah Yusuf 12:94)

When Yaqub and Yusuf were reunited, he prostrated in gratitude to Allah, acknowledging His mercy and the fulfillment of His promise.

Prophet Yaqub’s Final Years

Prophet Yaqub lived to an old age, and before his death, he entrusted his children with his final will. He advised them to remain steadfast in worshipping Allah and to follow the path of righteousness:
"O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you the faith, so do not die except while you are Muslims." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:133)

Yaqub passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy of patience, faith, and family unity. His story serves as a reminder that even in the face of loss, we must trust in Allah’s plan and hold fast to our faith.
